Vision
To provide a focused, challenging curriculum in a small, caring
community of learners.
Mission
South Texas ISD nurtures the development of lifelong learners
as they excel in a
challenging, focused curriculum that leads
to successful post-secondary education and careers.
Since its inception in 1963, South Texas Independent School
District has been providing unique programs for students in the
Rio Grande Valley. The district is currently serving children from
28 school districts in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. These
three counties span 3,643.2 square miles.
STISD was originally created as a rehabilitation district by
the legislature in 1963 to provide education for disabled youth
who were then excluded from public education. Voter ratification
came during the regular election of 1964. From 1964 to 1967,
the district was known as the Rio Grande Rehabilitation District
and associated with the Edinburg Consolidated School District.
In 1967, it became an independent district, and in 1974 it became
South Texas ISD. Lawmakers extended the district's purpose in
1984 to permit the operation of vocational magnet schools.
South
Texas ISD is a public, tuition-free district. The district
has three campuses in addition to Med Tech.
